Industrial expansion in South Durban often infringes upon the health of its poorest citizens. For 30 years, Debbie Peters' family lived in a slum, just 100 feet from the country's largest oil refinery. In April 2010, after five years of negotiations, the government relocated her family and all of her neighbors, but to an area still affected by heavy air pollution caused by the local petrochemical plants.
